Experience

Peer Assisted Learning Facilitator, College Algebra, Walter Library Minneapolis, MN August 2013 - December 2013 Created lesson plans to accomplish course goals, while motivating and directing group discussion Implemented techniques to create proper study habits, making students feel independent and capable Simplified complicated mathematical concepts from personal experience learning from teachers and professors, and projected questions back to students, presenting them with an opportunity to teach themselves Hello, my name is Matthew and I was born and raised in Minot, ND. I have just returned from traveling with my father for a year after earning my B.S. in Mathematics. I have hands-on experience tutoring in both paid and volunteer situations to both young and college-aged students both with positive results. My niece went from fidgeting and deflecting, to excited and leading in our session of long-division. Throughout public school I helped my fellows with math, science, and prepping for the AP calculus test in my spare time. After senior year, I headed to the University of Minnesota to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a specialization in applied mathematics to analysis in physiology, neuroscience, and science in general. During part of my time there, I was employed as a Peer Assisted Learning Facilitator for the mathematics department in college algebra. The idea was to teach students how to learn, they often know the material better than they think. During these experiences, I had some of my pupils say, "I never would have passed without you!" In reality, they went beyond "just passing," and even excelled and gained confidence. I sincerely enjoy math and science, and helping someone to have that "aha!" moment of understanding a concept they never thought they could. I am willing to take the time and effort to address your individual learning situation and style, and pinpoint the weak areas in you or your child's learning and understanding. I am able to cover a wide area of topics in public school and undergraduate subjects including mathematics, physics, basic chemistry, physiology, biology etc. I welcome calls, texts, and emails at any time, any day.
